Do You Have to Get Fit Before Starting Muay Thai

Before I started Muay Thai, I did something that surprised me: I didn't join a gym. I went for a walk.

I'd assumed, like a lot of people probably do, that you need to already be fit before you can start something like this. That the gym is for people who've already done the hard part. So for a few weeks before my first trip to Thailand, I just built op some very ordinary cardio - a version of the "couch to 5k" plan, done slowly, at home, on my own schedule. Nothing dramatic. Just enough that I wasn't starting form a complete standstill.

In practice, that meant a handful of short runs and walks a week - some three weeks, some weeks only one, depending on work and how my knees felt. I wasn't chasing a time or a distance. The only goal was to get my heart rate up gently and regularly enough that my body remembered what it felt like to be slightly out of breath on purpose. Some sessions were a slow ten-minute jog. Some were just a brisk walk round the block after a bad day at work. None of it looked impressive, and none of it needed to.

It turned out that was more than enough to begin.

On my first session, one of the Kru's (trainers) spent most of the class telling me to slow down and relax rather than push harder.

That surprised me too.

I'd expected to be told to try harder, to keep up, to match the pace of people who'd clearly been doing this for years.

Instead, the advice was almost the opposite: manage your own pace, don't gas yourself out in the first round, you don't need to prove anything today.

Starting Muay Thai Later in Life

That's really the honest answer to "do you need to be fit to start Muay Thai?". No - but you'll enjoy it more, and injure yourself less, if you've got a small amount of basic cardio underneath you.

One of the very first things I learned.
